Oral Hygiene
The most important place to start!
Baby Teeth Cleaning in Yuba City, CA
Washing your baby’s gums with a soft, clean washcloth or gauze pad after feeding is recommended to help clear away oral bacteria. When you child's teeth do start to come in, use a small very soft toothbrush to clean his or her teeth. Toothpaste is not necessary but if you do use it use the size of a grain of rice for children under the age of two and the size of a pea for children 2-5 years old. Flossing is not necessary until your child has two or more teeth right next to each other so that you cannot clean all sides of each tooth. If you do start to use floss, go slow and gently.
Kid's Oral Health
Parents should brush their children's teeth until they want to take over. Supervise for a bit and even brush your teeth with them and say out loud what you are doing. "I am brush the back of my front teeth" for example. This gives them cues on what to do without you needing to force them. You can also making fun with different apps on your phone or reward them afterward with something that they love.

Poor dental hygiene in childhood can lead to difficulty speaking and eating, infection, pain, and can affect overall appearance and self-esteem. Baby teeth will be gone for good by age 12 or 13, but positive dental hygiene habits formed in childhood can last a lifetime.
Teen Teeth
Becoming a teenager is when your child will start to share less with you about their dental habits and health. That's where we come in! We will make sure to talk to your child about the benefits of good oral hygiene and how to properly brush and floss.

Your child may be starting to feel self conscious about their teeth if they begin to notice they are not straight or are different sizes because not all of their baby teeth have fallen out. We will assure them that this is normal and go over getting braces if that is something that makes sense for them and you as their parent.
